Kodiak considers a plastic bag ban

Get the Facts

There has been a growing interest across the nation to ban the use of single use plastic bags and other single use plastics due to the negative environmental impacts of improperly disposed plastic bags.

The Kodiak Harvest Food Cooperative wants you to be informed about the proposed bag ordinance and have an opportunity to participate in Public Comment during the City Work Session on December 12th @ 7:30pm.

When did Kodiak get involved in this issue?

In December 2016, community members attending the "Kodiak Strong!" event began a discussion about the environmental impacts of single use plastics.  Following that event, discussion continued with input from local residents, organizations, and small businesses.

After hearing support from the community, the Solid Waste Advisory Board (SWAB) began a discussion about the subject and drafted an ordinance that was proposed to the Kodiak Island Borough (KIB).  KIB was somewhat supportive and recommended that the City Council be involved, since most stores are within city limits.

During a Joint Work Session on June 21, 2017 the issue of single use plastics and the proposed bag ordinance were opened for discussion.

The City Council was supportive of the proposal and will review transitional plans to move forward with banning the single use plastic bag during the City Work Session December 12th at 7:30pm.

If the City decides to proceed with passing the bag ordinance, Kodiak will celebrate Earth Day 2018 by ending distribution of single use plastic bags.

What can you do?

We encourage you to do your own research on this topic, carefully consider the pros and cons of this ordinance, and then participate during Public Comment at the beginning of the Session on December 12th @ 7:30pm.
